One of the ways to get from Hong Kong to the Maldives on Star Alliance is to route through Singapore on Singapore Airways (SA). We had never flown SA but were instantly impressed with the flight attendants (great uniforms – colors denote status) and service. Even in our economy seats, we were given little cups of Haagen Das ice cream for dessert on the first leg and King Cones on the second leg.
On the Hong Kong to Maldives route, we arranged to have a 6 hour layover so that we could see a little of this city-nation which originally banded with the Malaysian states to claim independence from the British in 1963, but then separated from Malaysia two years later in 1965.
The airport offers free 2-hour bus tours of Singapore, so we hopped on and saw some of Singapore. The bus makes one stop at the Merlion – a water fountain opposite from the amazing Marina Bay Sands Hotel.
The bus route from there wanders through old city, Little India, and the Muslim section. Not really that much to see, but interesting facts from the guide.
In hindsight, we would have hopped the subway or hired a taxi to take us around Singapore so that we could go up the Marina Bay Sands to their Skypark which sits 57 stories above Singapore and where you can swim in their Infinity Pool (only if you are a guest). We may have also gone to Sentosa Park which is an island with all sorts of activities. We might have also opted to spend the night to enjoy the Marina Sands and the lights, but I think the 2-hour tour was sufficient.
Onto the Maldives!
